Environmental conflicts like climate change are ready for a more peaceful discourse, one shaped by an awareness of brotherhood and sisterhood. Sacred activists and other ethical and spiritual leaders can dedicate themselves to cultivating a more equitable terrain for decision-making by calling for kindness, adding diversity to the community of voices, articulating shared values, and shining light on the larger meaning of decisions. Our unique role in the debate is to:
• Clarify the relationship between humans and nature, the interdependence of all beings
• Care for individual and societal anger, fear, craving, and delusion with compassion
• Encourage the letting go of rigid views or fixed outcomes
• Engage and learn from diverse cultural and spiritual traditions
• Cultivate individual and societal transformation and healing
• Model non-violent action
• Re-invigorate democratic processes
• Call-out all forms of discrimination
• Promote compassionate justice and the end of suffering
• Evoke a long-term perspective and the spaciousness of equanimity
• Sustain the effort to begin anew with tools of faith and hope
So, go forth. Do this. Blessings await you.
