On 12 February 2014 about 100 members of the Four Lakes Chapter of the Sierra Club gathered in chilly Madison, WI to find out how a sailor’s experiences in the Caribbean informs environmental advocacy and planetary healing.
Utilizing story as metaphor, we explored the root causes of climate change: fear and greed. We considered ways to transform and avoid planetary suffering through fierce compassion and powerful action. A tapestry of sailing mishaps and contemporary environmental disasters blended with insights from Caribbean natural resource managers and secular-Buddhism to illuminate a new approach to environmental advocacy during this climate emergency.
