Around the world people are joining others in their community to find ways to break dependence upon fossil fuels, live sustainably, and get ready for climate disruptions. Collectively, a grassroots network of “Transition Towns” is beginning. Folks are not waiting for government to fix the problem; neither are they aren’t sitting alone and frustrated. Participants recognize the coming end of this society–the one profiting from greed, war and the myth of perpetual growth. Neighbors are collaborating with neighbors to create an alternative society, celebrate what works, and give shape to a positive future.
The nuts and bolts of their efforts involve tilling community gardens, recycling industrial waste, creating–in response to the financial crisis–local currencies, doing the spiritual work of rebuilding relationships with themselves, others, and the natural world, and changing behaviors by repairing quality goods, letting go of the mindset of a disposable economy.
To my mind, the movement is a beautiful example of people opening their hearts to the hundreds of big and small deaths and rebirths we humans face in a lifetime. It recognizes–in the midst of collapse–that we can repair ourselves at a much higher order of being.
